Abstract
This study examines the presence of the Portuguese language as a theme in Caetano Veloso's songwriting, prose, & interviews. Focusing specifically on two of his songs, "E proibido proibir" & "Lingua," the discussion aims to discern Veloso's contradictory stance on language, aesthetics, & ideology. For contextualization & further insight into Veloso's linguistics & cultural politics, his views are compared to those of Olavo Bilac, in his poem "Lingua portuguesa," & to those of Fernando Pessoa, in his books Mensagem & A lingua portuguesa. 48 References.
