Abstract
The focus of this inquiry is the relationship between the underpinning concepts of Tropicalia & Gilberto Gil's nine-month performance as the glowing bureaucrat of Lula's government. The central question is: to what extent do Gil's positions, proposals, & actions in office suggest the persistence of tropicalist art concepts & political views? The conclusion is that tropicalist art concepts & political views (according to Gil & other leaders of that vanguard movement) have largely withstood Gil's passage through youth & middle age. Two differences emerge, though. Rather than writing sardonic satires over traditional values & pompous aesthetics, the sexagenarian pop star reveals a deep concern with the restoration of museums & preservation of the nation's historical heritage. Another difference is the pop artist's new attitude toward negritude & miscegenation. References. Adapted from the source document.
