Abstract
By using the medium of clay, I explore the process of navigating minority identities and illustrate the rich, complex conditions of such navigations. I hand-build my personal psychology, identity, and culture in a visually abstract but physically concrete way. Artists such as Junko Mori, Jae Sae Jung Oh, and Maya Mackrandilal have informed my studio practice with their ability to create worlds through the processes of repetition and containments of privacy. I use the research of scholars such as Judith Halberstam, Sascha Crasnow, and Laura Kina to develop a critical reading of my own work and create an aesthetic of failure through the selectivity of access of my personal narrative. Through this informed making, I stake a place in the art historical narratives of minority identities and exhibit the bold presentation of those just outside the fringes of society in a way that is authentically, deliberately exclusive.
