Abstract

Self-portraits. Feminism and art. Self-perception in women. Women artists -- Psychology
Stoic, tenuous, combative, disquieted, manic, silent, screaming, personal-mutual, a driving mandate, hear and see. The autobiographic model provided the conceptual framework for the research, delving into both representational and abstracted forms of articulating self: however, the parameters extended beyond the personal to a broader context-woman and the feminine resolve. Women who viewed, discussed, and shared personal reactions to the work, their narratives became integral to the dialogue of woman-elaborating on common topics evident from the female perspective. Violence, abuse, suppression, femininity, and personal resolve lend prominent, thematic psychological underpinnings to the subject matter, and are further evident through manipulation of media-articulating artist intent : means for interpreting signs and symbols that construct the diverse visual dialogue apparent in the work and research-signifier and the signified.
