Abstract

Nature is everywhere around us. My series of paintings, drawings and fabric prints will remind you of this fact. I construct images depicting common flora and fauna and create ecosystems in which my subjects exist. By representing these ecosystems through the lens of my compositions, I invite the viewer to view commonplace species in a new light and reconsider the way we see not only the quotidian but the entire world around us. My sources, ranging from artists like Ad Reinhardt to scientists like John James Audubon, serve as valuable inspiration in the creation of these ecosystems in my paintings, drawings, and prints. Complex relationships of value, color, and shapes, come together in compositions with dynamic living images that the viewer must puzzle their way through, slowly searching for the individual components. With the installation of large-scale fabric prints, I camouflage the audience into the ecosystems of my work. In slowing down and exploring the image, the viewer remembers to stop, ponder moments more often in everyday life, and see the beauty that exists not only in faraway places but can also be found in our homes, lives and all around us.
