Abstract

Modern medicine aims to understand everything about our bodies and break it down into quantifiable data. We live in a body-centric and body-conscious society that attempts to define a median to which all our bodies must relate. I question an agreed upon median, present it as a flawed concept, and make the case for the body to be looked at as an individual and for the individual. Through manipulating scans of medical gauze and creating my own unique process of printing, I abstract the body and create a language of invented anatomy that exposes an unidentified medical scan of an unknown human body. Backlit by lightboxes, my work invites the viewer to approach the images from a personal lived bodily experience and infer meaning through an individual understood sense of embodied physicality..
