Abstract
In this arts-based research (ABR) study the artist-researcher analyzed the process and decisions that went into creating, as well as the final products, to acquire a deeper understanding of the potential therapeutic effects within the ABR process. Reflective journaling revealed much about the insights driving the inquiry. As a result, themes in perseverance and de[re]construction were revealed. The artist discovered relationships between symbolism and materials, and reflected on the process of pushing through frustrations within the creation of the work and through personal issues with medical conditions and negative memories from the past. The artist-researcher also emphasized the importance of meaningful applications of students' artistic inquiry within the educational setting, with a focus on students with disabilities. The artist-researcher concluded that, creating artwork through the ABR process can reveal therapeutic qualities aiding to build resiliency both within studio work as well for personal well-being.
