Abstract
This study aims to understand the lack of representation that was evident by my personal knowledge, by exploring and describing in depth the experiences of four Portuguese women leaders in higher education in the South Coast of Massachusetts. Concerning their career paths (formal and informal), I looked for similarities and differences in their journeys, what barriers and obstacles they faced; what opportunities they had and pathways they took advantage of; and what types of actions were rewarded or discouraged. By understanding the dynamics that contributed to the participants’ experiences, Portuguese women will gain a better understanding of how to navigate the pathways towards higher education leadership and Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) will be better equipped to improve the representation and equality of Portuguese women in higher education leadership.
