Abstract
This dissertation aims to analyze the role of the Casas dos Açores (Houses of the Azores) in the light of the concept of transnationalism. It seeks to assess transnational practices in different social, economic, political, and cultural spheres, articulating and cross-referencing the data obtained through the application of the following methodologies: documentary analysis, surveys, and interviews with the presidents of the Casas dos Açores and other privileged informants. Focusing on the activities of these institutions, the dynamics of their intervention within communities were analyzed, taking into consideration the organizational structure of each Casa. To this effect, the study considers such indicators as the time of their foundation; the nature of their activities; their human, material, and economic resources; the size of the community they serve; and the mobilization capacity of these organizations and their leaders, with the aim to determine whether their action and intervention contribute to the promotion and facilitation of transnational practices. Further, in analyzing the nature of the activities promoted by the Casas dos Açores and the characteristics of their leaders, the study investigates to what extent these activities and characteristics foster the development of transnational practices, and whether this dynamic results directly or indirectly from the respective leaders’ lesser or greater belonging to the category of “transmigrants,” as well as to what extent the activities of the Casas are affected by the policies of the Regional Government of the Azores.
O presente trabalho tem como objetivo analisar o papel das Casas dos Açores à luz do conceito de transnacionalismo. Procuramos aferir as práticas transnacionais em diferentes esferas sociais, económicas, políticas e culturais, articulando e cruzando os dados obtidos pela aplicação das seguintes metodologias: análise documental, inquéritos e entrevistas aos presidentes das Casas dos Açores e outros informadores privilegiados. Focando-nos nas atividades destas Casas, analisámos as suas dinâmicas de intervenção junto das comunidades, tendo em consideração a estrutura organizacional de cada uma. Para tal, considerámos um conjunto de indicadores, tais como: o ano da sua fundação; a natureza das suas atividades; os recursos humanos, materiais e económicos; dimensão da comunidade; e a capacidade de mobilização dessas organizações e dos seus líderes. Temos como objetivo verificar se a sua ação e intervenção contribuem para a promoção e facilitação de práticas transnacionais.Analisámos a natureza das atividades promovidas pelas Casas dos Açores, assim como as características dos seus dirigentes a fim de investigar até que ponto as diferentes atividades promovidas fomentam o desenvolvimento das práticas transnacionais, e se essa dinâmica resulta, direta ou indiretamente, da menor ou maior condição de “transmigrantes” dos seus dirigentes, assim como até que ponto as referidas atividades são afetadas pelas políticas do Governo Regional dos Açores.
