Abstract
Water samples were collected biweekly in Buzzards Bay, MA, over the period from October 1987 to September 1988, during which several phytoplankton blooms were recorded. The samples were analyzed for temperature, Secchi disk measurements, chlorophyll-a, phaeopigment, bacterioplankton, and nutrients. Most of the blooms were in the semienclosed New Bedford Harbor, and they developed between major diatom blooms and coincided with periods of high silicate concentrations. During times of dinoflagellate dominance, the Si concentrations increased and remained high until another diatom bloom developed. The major dinoflagellate blooms encountered during the study period are tabulated.
